Trelle McCombs was named Texas A&M coach in June 2007. She came to A&M after serving one year as head coach at University of Tulsa. McCombs was head coach at Augusta State University from 2003-06.
Texas A&M failed to advance to the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament as their season wilted in three days of 100-degree heat at the NCAA D-I West Regional played at the Arizona State University Karsten Course. The Aggies finished 11th, and only the top eight teams advanced to the NCAA Finals.
Junior Ashley Freeman's (72-70-74=216) tie for 13th was low for A&M, but she missed advancing as an individual by one shot. Sophomore Sara Zwartnyski (76-73-70=219) posted the only other total in the top 50 as some 79s and 80s left the Aggies short of their goal of returning to the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament.
A&M placed sixth at the 2008 NCAA Championship.
Texas A&M placed second to Oklahoma State at the 2009 Big 12 Conference Championship played at A&M's Rawls Course in Lubbock, Tex. A&M's Freeman (72-73-80=225) birdied the second playoff hole to defeat University of Oklahoma's Kendall Dye (76-73-76=225) for the individual title.
The Aggie's Zwartynski (78-74-78=230) and senior Lauren Johnson (78-74-80=232) each posted top-10 finishes.
The wind blew 20-30 mph the first two rounds at the 6,564-yard Rawls Course and increased to 40 mph for the third round when the scoring averge jumped three more shots. Only two scores under 73 were posted during the entire tournament with several All-Americans in the field.
The A&M women won the 2006 and 2007 Big 12 Conference Championships.
Prior to coaching at Augusta State, McCombs had a very successful four-year run as head men’s and women’s coach at Mercer University.
McCombs earned a degree (exercise physiology, 1998) from Georgia State and was a four-time academic all-conference honoree. She played in the 1998 U.S. Women’s Amateur and has two top-ten finishes in the Georgia Women’s Open. |
