Coach Gavin Colliton (since 2000) has earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference Golf Coach of the Year honors.
Washington & Lee placed 17th at the 2009 NCAA D-III Championship on the Dye and Ryder Courses at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. W&L juniors Joe Gibson (73-70-83-79=305) and Brad Watts (77-75-75-78=305) tied for 51st in a field of 185 players.
The Generals finished 16th at the 2008 NCAA D-III Championship.
Washington & Lee rallied past Guilford College on the last day to repeat as 2009 ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Champions. The Generals also claimed the 2008 title after seven consecutive runner-up finishes (2001-2007).
The 2009 ODAC Championship was held at the Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles, VA. The first round was played at 7,417-yards on the Nicklaus Course, and the second round moved over to the Palmer Course (7,250 yards). Scores were high the first day, so the third round was shortened to 6,789 yards on the Nicklaus Course. Windy conditions the last day made the shorter course a good test.
W&L's Brad Watts (82-75-80=237) and Robert Womble (82-77-78=237) tied four fourth place, and Joe Gibson (81-81-76=238) finished a shot back in seventh. The team title guaranteed W&L an invitation the the 2009 NCAA D-III Championship.
Colliton is also assistant coach for the Washington & Lee football team. He played college football at Salisbury State and started on their team that reached the 1984 NCAA Division III semifinals his senior year.
Colliton earned a master’s degree at Salisbury while serving as assistant football coach in 1985 and 1986. He served as assistant football coach at Central Connecticut State and Princeton prior to joining the W&L football program in 1992. |

The Generals play all of their home matches and practice rounds at the 18-hole Lexington Golf and Country Club course located just south of the city limits. The course, recognized as one of the most picturesque and challenging in the state, has been the Generals’ home for over 60 years.
The course was redesigned in 1969 and a new nine was added at that time as well. Noted Augusta, Ga., architect Ellis Maples, who designed the No. 5 course at the Pinehurst Resort, was brought in to design the new course.
