Coach/Director of Golf Shane LeBaron was hired September 2008 to coach the new men's and women's teams at University of South Carolina-Beaufort.

The men started competition with the fall 2007 season and became official members of The Sun Conference in Fall 2008.

South Carolina-Beaufort finished seventh in the 2009 NAIA Championship at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. The Sand Sharks were 31 strokes behind tournament champion Oklahoma Christian.

Conditions during the tournament at the par-71, 6,973-yard course were sunny and breezy.

USC-Beaufort placed four players among the top 50 individuals. Leading the way were two Sand Sharks tied for 21st, George Thacker (71-77-76-77=301) and Chris Lane (74-79-74-74=301).  John Pannone finished in a tie for 44th (75-77-80-75-307), while Reed Howard tied for 48th (77-79-75-77=308).

South Carolina-Beaufort placed fifth at the 2009 The Sun Conference Championship at Lake Wales Country Club in Lake Wales, FL.

Pannone (74-77-74=225) tied for 11th with Colin Kelly (74-75-76=225) of Savannah College of Art and Design.

The Sun Conference, formerly The Florida Sun Conference, changed its name prior to the 2008-2009 season when non-Florida schools became members.

LeBaron is a PGA professional.  He was a member of both the Oklahoma State University and Methodist University golf teams.

LeBaron competes on mini-tours and teaches at Shane LeBaron Golf.
