Rebecca Mailloux was named women's golf coach in August 2008 replacing Lori Stinson who resigned to work in a family business.  Mailloux came to Grand Valley State after serving as women's golf coach (2004-2008) at St. Leo University (Fla).

Facing their most important round of the year, the Grand Valley State Lakers showed their strength and consistency posting five rounds in the 70s the final day to claim a best-ever second-place finish at the 2009 NCAA D-II Championship at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.   #1-ranked Nova Southeastern University (Fla) won the championship.  Heavy rain canceled second-day play, and teams played 36 holes on the scheduled third tournament day.

GVSU's Ashley Smith (77-78-77-78=310) and Caitlin Bennett (74-78-81-77=310) tied for 12th individually followed by teammates Kristina Langton in 15th and Sarah Hoffman tied for 21st at the 2009 national championship.

Grand Valley State repeated as regional champions and ran away with the 2009 NCAA Division-II East Regional in cold wet weather at Cedarbrook Golf Course in California, PA.  The Lakers claimed four of the five top individual places and won by 42 strokes earning another trip to the NCAA D-II Finals.  Allie Tyler (76-76-75=227) was medalist followed by teammate Kristina Langton (72-78-78=228) in second.  Ashley Smith (77-76-80=233) and Caitlin Bennett (75-82-77=234) were third and fourth.

Host school Grand Valley State won the 2009 GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Championship played at The Meadows Course in Allendale, Mich.  GVSU won by 25 shots over Ashland University.  The first day was washed out by heavy rain, and teams completed 36 holes the second day.  The Lakers placed four players in the top six led by tournament medalist Kristina Langton (75-71=146).  Ashland's Erin Misheff (79-75=154) was eight strokes back in second.

The Lakers' Ashley Smith (80-75=155), who lost the 2008 GLIAC individual title in a playoff, tied for third in 2009 followed by teammates Sarah Hoffman (83-73=156) and Allie Tyler (80-78=158).

The GLIAC is one of the stronger D-II conferences, and the tournament scoring average was 85.47 at the 2009 championship.

The GVSU Lakers placed in the top-six at NCAA Division II National Championship in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008.  The 2006 championship was played at GVSU's on-campus The Meadows Golf Course.

Mailloux was the Rhode Island women’s amateur champion each year from 1996 to 2000 and won the Massachusetts Open in 2003.

Mailloux played for Longwood College for two years before transferring to University of South Florida for two more years of competition. She graduated from USF (2001) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wellness Leadership.

After graduation, Mailloux played two years on the Futures Tour.
