Coach Steve Desimone (since 1980) led the Golden Bears to the 2004 NCAA National title and was named National Coach of the Year.

Desimone has taken the Bears to NCAA Regionals 12 times and advanced to the NCAA Finals in 1995, ’98, ’99, '00 and their big win at the 2004 NCAA Championships.

California started their 2009-10 season with a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.  The Bears were led by Eric Mina (70-72-73=215) who tied for ninth individually.

Cal missed qualifying for nationals, finishing ninth at the 2009 NCAA Division I Southwest Regional at University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.  Conditions were windy with rain delays at the par-71, 7,142-yard UT course.

California had two players finish among the top-15 scorers at regionals, as Eric Mina placed 10th (74-71-74=219) and John Murphy tied for 12th (76-71-74=221).

The Golden Bears finished seventh in the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference Championship at Seattle Golf Club. Conditions were windy and cool, with green speeds reaching 13 on the Stimpmeter at the 6,836-yard, par-72 course.

Cal's low scorer was Murphy, who placed fifth (69-74-69-72=284). Murphy had the first round lead with a 69. Mina finished 23rd (73-72-76-72=293).

Cal finished third at the 2008 Pac-10 Championship and 20th at the NCAA West Regionals.

Desimone graduated from Cal in 1970 after playing for the Golden Bears basketball team as an undergraduate. He then served in the United States military before returning to Cal to complete a double major in history and physical education and earning his master’s degree in physical education. Desimone became the Athletic Director at the College Preparatory School in Oakland where he remained until 1988.

Desimone shared his time between the College Prep school and the Cal golf team from 1980-88, and in 1989 he moved to Cal on a full-time basis.

He has been Pac-10 Coach of the Year, and he has coached several All-Americans and Academic All-Americans.
